| COMMUNITY PROFILE |
| Ireland > Sligo |
Sligo is the county town of County Sligo. The community is on Sligo Bay.
The community developed with its port. As early as the 15th century, Sligo was trading agricultural products with the continent. Over the next 200 years, exports had expanded to include beef, pork, hides, tallow, salmon and wool. The linen industry prospered in the late 18th century.
In the 17th century, there were a large number of English and Scottish settlers living in Sligo. In 1642, the British were put in jail, then were attacked by local men. After this massacre, most British residents left the town. In the early 1800s, Sligo became one of the country's major emigration ports. An estimated 60,000 people, most of them headed for North American, sailed from here between 1830 and 1850.
Coney Island in Sligo Bay can be reached across the sand when the tide is out. This was the namesake of the amusement park in New York.
