Ennis is the county town of County Clare. The community is on the River Fergus.
The name Ennis translates to mean "the island of the meadow of the long rowing." This refers either to the sweep of oars or the long tide that sweeps in from the Fergus Estuary.
Also known as Inis Cluain Ramh-Fhada.
A friary was established here in the early 13th century.
