Capital of the republic

Dublin is the county town of County Dublin.

The community is on the River Liffey.
The city name derives from Gaelic for "black pool."
Also known as Baile Atha Cliath.
Former and merged names include:
· Dyfflyn
The Easter Rising of 1916 was centred in Dublin. Insurgents seized administrative buildings throughout the city. At the General Post Office, they declared Ireland's independence. British forces soon crushed the rebellion, and 15 leaders were executed.

The phrase "Bloody Sunday" refers to several events in the history of Dublin and Ireland. An assassination squad led by Michael Collins killed 14 British officers on Sunday 21 November 1920. In retaliation, Black and Tans fired upon a crowd attending a football match at Croke Park; 12 spectators died and 60 were wounded.

Bloody Sunday is also used in reference to a 10 July 1921 attack by Catholics in Belfast, and to a 30 January 1972 attack by British soldiers in Derry.

The 120-meter-high Spire of Dublin, which now towers over O'Connell Street, was completed in 2003 on the site of the former Nelson's Pillar. The top of the earlier landmark was blown off in an IRA bombing in March 1996, and the rest of the column was officially destroyed three days later.

Public transportation: DART, Luas. (See the transit and travel sections below.)
