| Ireland > Annaghdown |
Annaghdown is in County Galway. The community is on Lough Corrib.
This community's name translates to mean "marsh of the fort."
Also known as Eanach Dhuin.
It is said that St. Brendan the Navigator founded a monastery here and lived there until his death in 577.
In 1828, a group of community members set out in a boat from Annaghdown to the fair in Galway. When one of the sheep they were bringing to the fair put its hoof through the boat's bottom, the boat flooded, causing 19 people to drown.
