Winnipeg is in the province of Manitoba. It is at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. The city is the provincial capital.
The city name derives from Cree for "murky water."

The community developed around Fort Garry, a fur-trading post.
When employers refused to recognize the Metal Trades Council as the union bargaining agent in 1919, workers responded with a general strike. The action heightened "anti-foreign" sentiments, and led to federal intervention.
In a face-off later known as "Bloody Saturday," one person was killed and many were hurt. The government later deported 34 foreigners involved in the strike.
The intersection of Portage and Main is known as the "windiest corner in Canada."
